About

AA Gallery is pleased to announce the retrospective of the late artist Karim Bennani (1936–2023).

A Pioneer of Modern Art in Morocco: 70 Years of Creation

This major event will highlight seventy years of artistic creation by an undisputed master and central figure in Moroccan modern art.

A major figure and true pioneer of Moroccan modernity, Karim Bennani (1936–2023) holds a central place in the history of visual arts in Morocco. From the early decades following Independence, he played a key role in shaping the contours of a distinctly contemporary artistic language, while actively contributing to the establishment and structuring of the country’s artistic institutions.

As co-founder of the Association Marocaine des Arts Plastiques (AMAP), Bennani belonged to the founding generation that laid the foundations of a professional art scene driven by ambition and open to new forms of expression.

His work, marked by high aesthetic rigor, is distinguished by the alliance of remarkable precision in drawing, a spiritual approach to form, and a subtle exploration of color. Through his innovative practice—interweaving Moroccan cultural heritage, international influences, and a profound reflection on modernity—Bennani played a decisive role in the emergence of an autonomous artistic discourse in Morocco.

His contribution paved the way for countless generations of artists seeking to assert a contemporary expression rooted in local references yet confidently open to the world.
