Tsoku Maela – Appropriate III, 2018
The series continues to study the exotic Western gaze on African culture and the intersection between culture and commerce.
Furthermore to explore the implications of misrepresentation through miseducation on communities such as the Masaai, Ndzundza Matebele and subcultures such as Pantsula of South Africa - a movement lesser known for its rebellious origins against forced removals from 1950 of residents from Sophiatown and Alexandra, Johannesburg, and more for a culture of young dissident, thuggish black men from the ghetto.
Through structural and institutional methodologies that serve to erase, misrepresent and ultimately condition a new generation of Africans to seek solace in Western values instead of their own ancestral beliefs, African cultures have been reduced to an aesthetic without heritage down to a sentiment that holds true for both the West and the African: acceptable when accepted.
